A picture is worth a thousand words.
Color is one of the most basic elements of design. As it is manipulated in different ways, it can help an artist or photographer to tell a story, express emotion, or convey those thousand words in unique ways. The beautiful HDR photography found in this post provides examples of this principle in action.
HDR, or high dynamic range, photography is a style of image processing that allows a vastly larger range between the lightest and darkest areas of a photograph. Usually this effect is created by taking several photographs with each snapshot capturing the image at a different exposure.
In other words, a photographer might place a camera on a setting that allows them to snap three images in less than a second. Each of the three photos will capture the image using a different exposure setting. The first might be darker than usual, the second might be normal, and the third might be set lighter than normal. The three images are then merged together using a program like Adobe Photoshop to create a picture with a unique range of color not found in standard photos.
Some of these examples might be considered a bit over the top or a bit exaggerated. They are, however, all very eye catching. They’re also all taken from the Creative Commons section of Flickr which means that if you see one that you’d like to use on your blog, feel free to take it. Just be sure to either link the image back to the its Flickr page or add a text link somewhere in your document crediting your source.
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section. Would you consider using images like these to illustrate articles on your blog or website? Does this style of photography appeal to you? Why or why not?
Without further ado, I’m proud to present this collection of beautiful HDR photography.
